Firefox Qauntum 64-bit for Windows 10 64-bit CRASHES my PC

A few days ago I was updated automatically to the 64-bit version 57, Firefox Quantum. My PC runs 64-bit Windows 10 Professional (version 1709).

All browsers I use have 3 starting pages; MSN is one of them with lots of graphics. When I ran the new 64-bit version 57 Firefox Quantum, this browser crashed my PC. I had opened a 4th tab. I noticed soon that my PC became non-responsive.

There was heavy activity on the hard drive, something like the old-days swapping to a memory file. Right-click on the Taskbar did not respond (to select Task Manager, then Stop Firefox. Not even the old Alt+Ctrl+Delete did not work. I had to turn off my PC only by pressing and holding the Reset button for a number of seconds.

This aggravating problem repeated two more times. Again, if I open a 4th tab, my PC crashed horrendously. The problem does NOT happen with other browsers (under the same circumstances). In fact, I can open even 10 tabs in the 64-bit Chrome and it works just fine.

It doesn’t look good at all!

Three tabs, even 30 tabs, should not be a problem.

Some Windows 10 users are encountering severe performance problems with Firefox 57 related to accessibility services. Please see the reply from philipp in the following thread in case this bug is affecting your system: Firefox 57 hangs up.

In my case, Accessibility was not enabled:

Accessibility Activated false Prevent Accessibility 0 Accessible Handler Used true Accessibility Instantiator

I remembered that the crash occurred soon after I went to my Facebook page. I checked Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser restarted Firefox with 7 tabs, including my Facebook page. No crash in 20+ minutes…

If it is a fix, it is a cumbersome one. As per Mozilla info, that Accessibility feature is problem-prone and useless for the vast majority of users. The feature should be disabled by default. But the help should publish prominently info on how to enable Accessibility for users with disabilities. It would be fair to everybody.

It worked yesterday for a while. The issue came back today, however. Title bar reads: Mozilla Firefox (Not Responding).

Firefox has always been the slowest of the major browsers. Methinks it still uses the primitive swap to memory technology. The browser is a memory hog which handles graphics poorly. My PC has 8 GB of memory.

I heard again the hard drive whirling, while making my PC unusable. It takes a long time to move from tab to tab. Even closing Firefox takes an eternity. And even after that it takes precious too-many seconds to get my PC back. With Firefox closed and completely out of memory, my PC is operational again. But one got to pull one’s hairs doing all these!

I will uninstall Firefox. There are browsers out there that are in step with today’s technology. I might come back after I hear better news about Firefox.

I sincerely thank all who took their time to read my question and try to help me. Right now, I need no more answers regarding Firefox.

There are also issues with Windows 10. Best of luck to you all!
