How can I get rid of Pocket and restore my bookmark functionality?
The new version of Firefox has installed Pocket as the default bookmark creator. I have a plethora of bookmarks and don't choose to recreate them. How do I get back the ability to create a bookmark in the old bookmark file? I've already disabled Pocket, but I can't get the old bookmark menu to create a new one. It seems short sighted not to give folks a choice of what to use.
Newer is not always better, folks. If it works, don't fix it.
I'm running Windows 7.
Thanks!

However, if I want to bookmark something that Firefox thinks has already been bookmarked, I can only edit it whether I can actually find it or not. Yes, I have many duplicates. I'm fine with that.
Firefox has prevented duplicate bookmarking for a few years now. When you are on a page with a blue star, you can find the current folder location by clicking the star to call up the Edit Bookmark panel and then expanding the folder tree (there's an icon to the right of the current folder name that opens a tree view; the current folder should be highlighted in that box). If that location isn't optimal, you can change the location to a new one.

Don't you see the star on the Navigation Toolbar to bookmark to current tab?
If you do not see the star then check the Customize palette and possibly click Restore Defaults.

Note that you can drag the Pocket icon to the Customize palette or simply right-click and use "Remove from toolbar" to disable Pocket.

Yes, I have the star, no I don't use tabs. I'm using the Classic Theme Restorer. And, if you had read my question completely, you would have seen that I had already disabled Pocket.
I know enough to look at the website for help. I never ask unless I can't find the answers on my own, None of these things actually address the problem.
Thank you for trying.

What's your preferred method to create a Firefox bookmark that you now cannot find or which now does not work? These are the ones I know about:
- Ctrl+d
- right-click a blank area of the page > star icon on the context menu
- (classic menu bar) Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page
- click the star icon on the toolbar (defaults to "Other Bookmarks" category)
(classic menu bar) Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page
This is the way I've done it since Netscape. It seems as though the bookmark file will make a new bookmark. However, if I want to bookmark something that Firefox thinks has already been bookmarked, I can only edit it whether I can actually find it or not. Yes, I have many duplicates. I'm fine with that.
Yes, I resist change, but I fail to see why something needs to be improved that worked well in the first instance.
Thanks for the assistance. Now. Can we get Mozilla to drop the Pocket business and give people a choice whether they wish to use it or not?
Just to verify. Did you disable Pocket in the correct way?
Setting extensions.pocket.enabled to false on the about:config page is not the proper way to disable Pocket as this likely leaves the Pocket menu items. You should move the Pocket toolbar icon to the Customize palette to disable Pocket in the correct way and remove the Pocket menu items. When this has been done then you can consider to set extensions.pocket.enabled to false.
The only way to get duplicate bookmarks is you use a copy or drag a tab or link to a bookmarks folder (toolbar or to a menu or to the star). If the URL is already bookmarked (star is highlighted) then you will see the "Edit This Bookmark" dialog.

I clicked on the pocket icon and deleted it from the toolbar. I followed the link to disable it first, which did NOTHING. Hopefully I won't have that outfit intruding into my computer with their announcements. If I wanted that kind of media, I'd use TV instead of Internet and I'd get the NYT and the other BS propaganda publications. I don't care what Big Media is doing and want me to know about, and I don't want them knowing what I care about. Pocket sucks. Pocket is evil.
Hi CAB4, this thread refers to Firefox 54 vwhile you are discussing Firefox 57. Firefox 57 has a different pocket button in a new location, and a section of Pocket-driven tiles on the "Activity Stream" on new tab. It's always best to start a new question when there have been such significant changes.
I think Pocket reflects what users use it for. If you refuse to use Pocket, it can't reflect your views.
