The option "-remote .." does not work in version 36.0. Why?
I have been using firefox under linux, currently Mint 17 Qiana. Opening a web page in my mail handler exmh is done by the command "firefox -remote openURL($xuri)". The -remote option should open it in a new tab of an existing running firefox and it has been doing it until recently (actually, twice, that is in two tabs, which did not worry me too much). However, since an update to firefox 36.0, the option is ignored, two windows are opened with a default page so I can't get to the link at all. I tried the obvious - re-installing firefox, restarting the linux to no affect. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I had problems to learn how to read the replies. After some search the answer appears to be in https://bug1080319.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=8502937 where it says, besides other, "- -remote 'openURL(url,new-tab)' can be replaced with firefox -new-tab url "
Many thanks to people who responded so quickly!!
The -remote switch has been added back in Firefox 36.0.3. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/36.0.3/releasenotes/
