Firefox 4 and Google toolbar do not play nice together. Clicking on dropdown box does nothing.
Type something into the search box, you start to get suggestions in the drop down. You click on the drop down suggestion and nothing happens. You must type the entire search into the search box for it to stick. I reverted to 3.*** until this is corrected.

it started happening with firefox 4 beta 11. as soon as i noticed it i went back to beta 10. i tried firefox 4 RC and found the same problem and went back to beta 10. just tried today's release same problem so i am back to beta 10 again.
Yes, this is a clumsy and definitely a retrograde step. You cannot click on the box and highlight it any more . You cannot select any item from the saved history which means that the saved search history is somewhat less than useless.
Clearly this update has been inadequately tested for 'normal' use.
Suddenly Chrome begins to look attractive.
Think twice before upgrading to this version!

Gees, I thought this was just me. First link I have found re this subject, been searching since yesterday. Now have 2 machines googleless, PC & laptop. Surely one would have thought an update would have been in place prior to FF4 release. I really hope this is looked at asap. it's totally useless as it is. I would have to agree - maybe not a good choice to upgrade to this version.
That problem is probably caused by the Google Toolbar extension. Disable that extension to verify it's the cause.
Sorry, I am not with you here...the problem IS the google toolbar extension, you cannot select from drop down suggestions. Disabling will definitely fix the problem, but the tool bar will no longer be available.

Have the same problem. For a temporary fix I disabled Google Toolbar and installed Googlebar Lite.
You can't click on anything in the drop down box, but you can scroll down with the arrow keys to select the item you want. Annoying yes, but not a reason to dump FF4 for me. I'm sure it'll be fixed pretty soon.
Rather than spend my time on this issue, I simply installed 3.6 and now my Google toolbar works as I expect it to. I should also add that I did not first uninstall Firefox 4, but installed 3.6 after I closed down version 4 (for the installation process).
I'm subscribed to this thread so I assume someone will fix this problem, notify me, and I'll enjoy the benefits of version 4; until then, I'm sticking with what works.

Thanks for that quick, but temporary fix, works fine but a little inconvenient. Will use this until it's fixed.
This is a horrible and very annoying bug. I wonder if Google planned it this way to try to get people to switch to Chrome?
I'm very glad to see that others also have this problem, which confirms that it is a bug and not a problem with my particular installation. This is a VERY annoying problem since I use this feature constantly. Sure has disrupted my workflow. Please get it fixed ASAP!!!
I'm a very suspicious person and that thought didn't occur to me. I must be slipping.
I reported this (as best I could) to the Google toolbar team about 10 days ago and am surprised it wasn't fixed for the full release. I've reverted back to 3.6 which is a shame - I'm also wondering whether Google really want to fix this.
Google seems to have taken note of this problem
is a "known issue" at the google toolbar page
"Unable to select from the search box drop-down list"
http://www.google.com/support/toolbar/bin/static.py?page=known_issues.cs

Yep. Same problem here. Uninstalled and went back to 3.6.16 and retested. Worked fine.
Took me a couple of hours to figure out the problem to get back some web pages.
Now I'm wondering if my spouse's Mac is going to have the same problems. And boy, will I hear about it!
Is it a selection from the drop down menu you were having a problem with? Mine was simply getting the drop down menu to appear.
I rolled back to Firefox 3.6 until this fixed.
Google Toolbar Lite sucks. I want my toolbar back and my Gmail notifier.
WAIT! There is an easy workaround, pointed out by google themselves! Just go to the search result with your cursor 'down' key, and then press enter: VOILA!
Sure beats going back to FF 3!!
I installed ff4 and the first thing I noticed was I couldn't select any history in the google drop down menu using the mouse. Why the f would anyone think using the down arrow button and then hitting enter is even fing acceptable !!! It's ridiculous how dumb they are for this issue. Hope they fix it soon but at least there are others with the same issue. Been "bugging" me really bad =)
