Hi, so I am a regular user of mozilla firefox on windows system. I did not notice when the problem started but firefox has been deleting my history everyday. I log in next day and there is no record of any previous history. I mostly browse on normal mode not the private, also the history settings are also checked not to clear browser history when firefox closes. Also I did not have a mozilla accoount previously before writing this question. Could it be the reason behind firefox deleting the history ? Would you please tell me what can be the issue and will I be able to resolve it on my own ? Thank you !

If you use external cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for Firefox.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

This could be a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

Is this with all websites/pages, some, a few?

You may be in Private Browsing mode or told Firefox not to remember.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

Turn off Always Use Private Browsing Mode Turn on Remember My Browsing And Download History At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

Macs: Make sure you install Firefox properly and that you do not run Firefox from within the DMG (Disk Images) file. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Hi Fred, thank you for the quick response. Yes the problem is with all the websites. I already did the steps in your answer yesterday about custom history settings but today morning all the history was erased again. And yes I have installed firefox properly. It is not a DMG file.

Check your protection programs. Some of them have settings that clear browser data.

We do not recommend using other programs to clean Firefox because they could corrupt the files. Also, the browser can clean itself.

I would try a new profile. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles

I changed my history settings recently because of issues I was having. I now use "Custom settings" > Remember browsing and download settings. The "Clear history ..." option is evidently problematic.

Hi cor-el, thank you for the suggestions. Yes I checked the ccleaner. For the firefox settings, the boxes for history, cache and cookies were checked. Could that have caused the history to be cleaned ? I have unchecked those boxes now, would it solve the problem ?

Hi Arman, you misinterpreted my problem here. I wanted to keep history not clear it. Anyways thank you for the suggestions but my problem has been solved by cor-el's solution.
