can I delete "Firefox 3.6.12.dmg" after install of update?

I have a mac. I installed "Firefox update 3.6.12." The update is 55.5 MB and another file - Firefox 3.6.12.dmg - also appears on my desktop.

I'm unable to send the .dmg file to the trash. Is this file necessary?
