I moved some messages from Inbox to another folder, and closed program. Now remaining inbox messages do not display, Repair Folder did not help.

I waited until the moved messages had completed moving before closing TB. The mail.ktb.net/Inbox file is still 1600MB and Inbox.msf 41MB, but no messages will display.

I did not compact folders yet, fearing unrecoverable deletions. TB Inbox Folder Properties shows 0 messages and 150MB on disk.

I renamed the Inbox file copy to Recover without any changes and copied it to Local Folders. All previously undisplayed messages are now displayed in the Recover folder.

Perhaps there was a flaw in the original Inbox.msf file. Newly downloaded messages were being displayed in the Inbox folder, but not those previously downloaded of my moving some to another folder.

Your suggestions prompted me to discover a solution by experiment.

Thank you again.

I am going this somewhat bizarre route, because the file size reported by Thunderbird and the file manager are markedly different. That is weird, very. I actually suspect issues with the hard disk itself, but they will become evident if you can not copy the inbox file to another location. If the file can not be copied, I have no solutions for that. other that to use windows check for error option on the drive which may or may not recover the data in the file, or most of it. My experiences have been that usually windows just truncates the file where it strikes an error. and created a bunch of CHK files from the "lost" sectors. Sometime you can cobble them together into something useful. But it is a lot of work.

Make sure Thunderbird is closed. Make a copy of the inbox file of 1600mb. Then open it in a text editor. Not windows notepad, it will not cope. Something likeNotepad++ would be good. DO NOT USE A WORD PROCESSOR. plain text only

Use the text editor to change all occurrences (find and replace) of

X-Mozilla-Status: 0008

with

X-Mozilla-Status: 0001

Save and rename the file to say recovery. make sure it continues to have no file extension. Save it into the "Mail\local folders in your profile folder.

Start Thunderbird. Your local folders should now have a folder called recovery with all of the contents of that 1600mb file visible.

Thank you, Matt. I made a copy of Inbox, but Notepad++ could not open it. Any other suggestions for monster files?

I appreciate your help immensely,

Using EditPad Lite7 I found one instance of X-Mozilla-Status: 0008. Most messages are X-Mozilla-Status: 0009 and a few X-Mozilla-Status: 0019.

Please advise.

Update: The files I moved to another directory are in the Inbox file with X-Mozilla-Status: 0009, and the files which I did not move (and will not display) show X-Mozilla-Status: 0001.
