Firefox 40.0.3 on new Dell with Win 8.1. No graphics or buttons show; just some text. Problem is discussed in a 2004 forum where most respondents thought that the page just loaded slowly. Clearly not the case here. This machine is very fast. Could it be a setting?

Looks that some CSS files are blocked.

What Anti-Virus software do you have?

You can check the Net log and the Network log in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) to see if content fails to load or possibly is blocked (file size is zero).

Use Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Issues have been previously linked to the McAfee Site Advisor extension. Try to disable it and see if the problem persists.

To disable it: Type "about:addons" in the Location bar Find the extension and click on its "Disable" button

The main Big Charts style sheet is loaded from here:

http://bc.wsj.net/content/v0007/css/bigcharts.css?v=hat

Can you open that directly? A successful load is a long list of style rules.

If you get an untrusted connection error, please STOP, and let's find the solution for that. Does the error page list a code in parentheses (separated_by_underscore_characters)? It might be in a Technical Details section that you need to expand.

Fred McD scared the hell out of me. What did I do to let you see my System Details?

Disabling either Adobe PDF extension disables both. Not sure how to uninstall one and not the other. Happy to disable both. Don't really remember how they got there. Disabling them does not affect Big Charts.

I am using McAfee until the year runs out because it is free (I'm a cheapskate I guess) However, I have had McAfee WebAdvisor (not SiteAdvisor) turned off for a long time.

Concerning the style sheet; I downloaded the style sheet (the .css file) as a text file. I don't mean any disrespect but I don't see the relevance of downloading a text file. I thought that BigCharts would use its style sheet on the server side. Is that wrong?

Thanks

Did not pursue cor-el suggestions. Will do later. More concerned about how I let Fed McD see my System Details.

Normally a style sheet displays in a tab. Did Firefox ask you to Open/Save it, treating it as a download? That could be a problem, since then it probably wouldn't get used in styling the page.

It's most common for web pages to link in one or more external style sheets and it's the browser's job to apply them. Keeping these separate allows the site to update itself more easily, and takes advantage of caching, otherwise the web pages would be heavily larded up with style rules throughout consuming much more bandwidth.

Also, regarding sites seeing your plugins list, yes, that is an option available through scripting. You can use my test page here to see what I mean:

Thanks so much for the reply about seeing my plugins list. I haven't had time to think all this out but will definitely pursue all suggestions later this week. Wanted to express my appreciation for the information.

This is much more interesting than the BigCharts issue.

Unless one knows what they are doing, the best way is to remove them all, then get the current full installer.

You can find the installation path of all plugins on the about:config page.

I noticed a globe and not a padlock and the https:// protocol in the screenshot, so that would make a problem with security software blocking content less likely. You would still have to check why Firefox isn't using all stylesheet to style the page.

Can you tell us what Anti-Virus software do you have?

Problem was Privacy Badger. Embarrassed that I didn't find that myself. I tried disabling the usual suspects such as McAfee but was careless.

HOWEVER, Thank You to everyone who responded. The suggestions and explanations were much more interesting and informative than my original problem. I have saved everything and will try to work through each separate piece of information. Love to find out something interesting that I can understand. It seems to get a little harder each year after I passed 78.
