Try saving to a different location. I have a Mac OS X Version 10.4.10. I think I should be able to download Firefox 4. I have Firefox Version 3.6 now.

Did you try a different download location?

  • Firefox > Preferences > General : Downloads : "Always ask me where to save every file"

I am often getting this kind of error, although I believe it's less frequent with Firefox 4 than with the previous version. I do not know a proper solution, but I have noticed this:

  • If I simply try to re-download, it will fail again.
  • If I clear the list in the download window, I can download the same file without any trouble.

I believe the problem may be related to the antivirus software. The file is downloaded completely, and instead of moving it to the final position Firefox gets confused and deletes it.

I would assume that AV software is (b)locking the file and thus makes it impossible for Firefox to modify or move the file. AV software should only scan the file after the download has finished and Firefox passes the file over to the AV software. If real-time scanning is enabled in the AV then AV software might think that the download has finished because Firefox closes the file after writing a chunk to disk to prevent dataloss in case of a crash.
