If I display an .sql file, ie: a membership list, I can change the view to Excel so I can edit it and save it. This works with XP, Vista, 7 and 8, any version of Internet Explorer (at least 6 to the latest 10). When I attempt to do the same in Firefox, the request is simply ignored, there is no response from Firefox at all. Looking at Aplications in the Option tool, .sql is not one of the file types.

When the server sends the file, it may be using a content-type like text/plain instead of a content-type specific to SQL. In that case, there isn't a convenient way to associate it with a different application.

(Sometimes content meant to be viewed in Excel is sent with the text/csv content-type. Most likely that already is associated with Excel.)

Without access to the site, I can only guess what content-type the server is sending. To investigate, you could try the Live HTTP Headers extension. Or if you already use Firebug, you can find it on the Net tab.

As a workaround, is there a link you can right-click and download (Save Link As) rather than opening it in Firefox? I know this isn't always possible (or convenient)...
