Any time I open any folder or subfolder, all the messages fly to the trash file. How do I stop that?

does the account actually still exist? IMAP mail accounts are synchronized, so you open the folder for an old account and everything synchronizes into oblivion.

You can often recover the mails, but seriously it is a fair amount of work, so unless you have something you really want to keep leave it.
