My Ubuntu 16.10 (64-bit) doesn't update Firefox to version 51 (I still have 50.1.0)

I've had the same problem also for «other famous» browsers, so it seems to be a Linux problem, in fact recently there were lots of system updates for Ubuntu (kernels and other basic components, etc.). What can I do, are there any terminal command i could use, instead of totally removing and reinstalling Firefox?

Hi

Thank you for your question. I use Ubuntu 16.10 (64 bit) myself so hopefully I can help.

From the infomation that you have provided indicates that you are using the Ubuntu version of Firefox. The community that supports Ubuntu take the Mozilla version of Firefox and include a few extra elements to make it work with the Ubuntu interface before publishing it through the Ubuntu Software application. This can take a few days (and is outside of Mozilla's control), but you should get a prompt soon from that application that a new software update is available.

You could install a Mozilla version of Firefox but while you would get the new versions sooner, you would lose some of the integration with Ubuntu. I recomend that you wait a few days and you should get the up to date version of Firefox from Ubuntu Software.

Only the official builds of Firefox for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux from say mozilla.org or www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ get internal updates from Mozilla.

If you use a official build make sure the Firefox folder has read/write permissions for the updates. A easy way if you are the only user is to have Firefox folder in Home.

Also automatic Firefox updates for the official builds are throttled a fair bit until Friday that week if all goes well.

The build you appear to have is a third-party build from your Linux distro and it gets update packages from them. Some distros can be quick while others can take a bit for updates.
