I have no trouble selecting a homepage of my choice, but there doesn't seem to be an option of starting it in a private window. Can that be done?

As far as I know, there is no way to force Firefox to always start in private browsing mode. And also, your homepage will not be loaded in private browsing mode because the default about:privatebrowsing page.

If you would like to start Firefox in private mode, you can simply right click the Firefox icon on the Windows 10 taskbar and select to open a new private browsing window.

You can also add -private to the end of firefox.exe in the target for your Firefox shortcut. This can be found in the shortcut properties, if you right click and select properties.
