Today I got a notice to upgrade Firefox. I downloaded it but It is not compatible with Symantec Endpoint Protection, which I have to keep on my computer. So I had to uninstall the ungraded version of FireFox. Now I am stuck without Fireforx. How do I get the old version back?

That is just a toolbar that symantec installs into Firefox, it does nothing to protect your computer. Symantec itself is still running and protecting your computer, look in the notification area down by your clock in the bottom right hand corner of your computer.

Norton team already added support for Firefox 22

Please update your Norton product to get latest virus definition along with patch and reboot!

Download Firefox from www.getfirefox.com, install it, and then update your symantec. Please note that even though your symantec toolbar may not work in Firefox, it does nothing to protect your computer and the actual virus protection is still running in the background.

Thank you. I will try that.

Please continue your questions in the same thread, don't create new ones. Firefox works with symantec, the only thing that won't work is the useless toolbar, the actual virus protection remains working.

I checked ADD-ons Manager as well as Extensions: In both places it says that Symantec is disabled because "Symantec Intrusion Prevention is incompatible with Firefox 22.0." Is this what you mean by the "useless toolbar?"

Symantec is still running! Thank you so much. I am relieved :)

Actually, no, this is not the Norton/Symantec toolbar. This is a Firefox Extension that is part of the Symantec Endpoint Protection Client. It provides real-time examination of files being downloaded and the sites they are being downloaded from. It makes decisions whether to block a download based on the reputation of the website as well as the file itself. It provides actual, active protection, and is a key part of the layered security approach in use at our organization.

Firefox already uses your computer's virus protection to scan downloads in Firefox (using the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone). Firefox also checks all websites you visit against a database of phishing and malware websites that is constantly updated. This alone proves my point, the Norton and Symantec extensions are useless and provide "functionality" that is already replicated in modern browsers for the past several years. You will have bigger security risks by not updating Firefox than by not having this "extension".

Thank you. I updated. It was very kind of you to help me out :)

Firefox is in the browser business, not the security business. As good as it may be at offering protection, it is not perfect. Firefox has its own criteria and methodology for making reputation based decisions and so does Symantec. Neither one has all the answers but with the two together we get some pretty good protection. I am not willing to accept less protection just because either one thinks they are the only game in town.

First, this isn't a list that Firefox or mozilla runs itself. The download scanner uses the anti-virus solution you have on your computer to scan downloads. The Phishing and malware protection is a collaboration between Google, Mozilla and third-party malware blocking groups. being a browser means we have to be worried about security, and using an old version of Firefox with known and public security issues (Firefox 21 has over a dozen) is bad practice.

Thank you. I upgraded to the newest version of Firefox.

From the centralized Symantec management console, I see occasional events throughout the organization where the Symantec Endpoint Protection client's Network Threat Protection and Download Insight functions are blocking Firefox from going to phishing and malware sites and preventing downloading of questionable files. I have no centralized console for Firefox, so I don't know what it is doing on user PCs, if anything. Firefox is a great browser and of course I will upgrade to the latest release. I have no further comment.

I don't think this is my issue, I do not have symantec toolbar and I don't want my anti virus to be disabled

This thread has many more replies because of people confusing the two Symantec add-ins: Norton Toolbar and Symantec Intrusion Prevention. I disabled Norton Toolbar some time ago because there is no point in having it. The Intrusion Prevention has jumped in several times and protected me from dangerous web sites such as a Russian web site pretending to be a technical PDF on database design. I have just installed Firefox 22.0 and now have Intrusion Protection disabled. Since Firefox 22.0 came out more than a week ago, I am hoping Symantec will update the Intrusion Prevention very soon.

jmk909er, the Firefox browser doers not touch your separate antivirus client as you will be able to use it as normal. What is disabled is the version of the Extension you have that is not compatible with Firefox 22.0

Ok it looks like you misunderstood in your thread and thought your antivirus will be disabled and not the extension installed in Firefox which needs to be updated for Firefox 22.0

I do not have the Norton toolbar on my computer, only Symantec Endpoint Protection version 12.1.2. The links in this thread also take you to updates for Norton Internet Security and Norton 360, which I do not have.

When I check Firefox, it states Symantec Vulnerability Protection is incompatible with Firefox 22.0.

Symantec also does not recommend turning off the protection: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO80887

Since Symantec supports IE6-10 but not FireFox 22, I will have to either go back to FireFox 21 or switch to Chrome.

Sep 12.1.4 will re-enable the plugin so long as the plugin model for firefox does not change again (I work for RPS/BCS at Symantec). Unfortunately the mantra of long-term stability overode the ability to deploy the patch that 360/norton consumer uses because the common client code base is to new in the 360 product to back-port the current plugin that works.

Incorrect. The SVP plugin is a SONAR component that also works with IPS?IDS from sep-12.x

IT IS NOT A TOOLBAR. And it is a reputation scanner that only uses data on the akami servers we have at symantec. It is 100% different than safeguards by the url reputation google/ff use. It makes its own url scans using Symantec only cloud servers.
