Unresponsive Script errors popups in Firefox 14.01

more options

Since upgrading from Firefox 13.01 to 14.01, Firefox is taking a long time to launch and I am receiving multiple unresonsive script error popups when it tries to launch. I have the same extensions installed that I had in 13.01 and all are compatible with 14.01. Again this issue ONLY started when upgrading to 14.01. I have tried to determine what extension is the problem and turn it off, however when I launch Firefox again, another unresonsive script error popup occurs with a different extension. I'll remove that one and it popups again about a another different one. This is crazy! I have even tried a complete clean install, with no luck. What is the problem?

Could you clarify what you mean by a "clean install"? Did you reinstall the program but keep your settings, or did you blow out all of your settings as well (definitely NOT recommended without a good backup)?

You can use Firefox's "Safe Mode" dialog to disable all your add-ons and then just reenable the most important ones. That might be faster than turning them off one-by-one. More information: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. Be careful only to check the box about add-ons to avoid data loss.

Does it make any difference if you change your startup option to "a blank page" here:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > General

(Assuming you can get to that page!)

Firs, tried as I said, turning off (disable), with no luck on each that caused a unresponsive script error with no luck. Next I tried a (remove) of the extension(s), with no luck. Lastly I did a complete uninstall (removing all setting, extensions, etc) and reinstalling 14.01 and adding each extension one-by-one and restarting Firefox after each extension install, however the unresponsive script popups returned and like I said, I AGAIN tried to remove them one-by-one...even after the clean install, a different unresponsive script popup would popup after I removed that problem one. Hope this helps.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

Cor-el,

Already tried that. Did not work... :(

You can try to reset Firefox.

Reset creates a new profile and tries to import some settings from the old profile leaving the old profile intact.

Cor-el,

Thanks for your help BTW.

Tried that too with no luck :(

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that works.

I have Norton 360 v6 and Malwarebytes. Both are up-to-date.

Tried the Safe Boot with networking and Firefox 14.01 loaded fine and fast with all extensions on.

Crazy!

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

I use Roboform and the first unresponsive script error popup is about Roboform. Their tech support just emailed me about an hour ago and ask if I had Trusteer Rapport installed on my system (https://www.trusteer.com/product/trusteer-rapport) and I said yes. They instructed me to Stop Rapport, which is a setting Rapport has, and relaunch Firefox 14.01 and see if the unresponsive script error popup returns and it did not! They then told me to do a complete uninstall (all user settings) and re-download Trusteer Rapport from their website and install again and see if the unresponsive script error popup returns. They said it should not. However after doing a clean reinstall of Trusteer Rapport, however the popups came back :(

I emailed Trusteer about this issue and I am waiting for a response. Roboform tech support responded after I told them it did not work by saying only that they are aware of the issue with Trusteer Rapport with nothing more said in their email.

I only know that Trusteer Rapport is a MUST HAVE security software and I have had it for years and it has never caused problems and that the version of Roboform I have is current and was the SAME version that was installed when using Firefox 13.01 and Roboform did not cause these popups in 13.01

So, this evening, I did another clean uninstall of Trusteer Rapport AND a clean uninstall of Roboform and relaunched Firefox 14.01 and the only unresponsive script error popups where from another add-on extension called WorldIP. No other popups occurred.

With that being said, I can say that Firefox 14.01 is causing issues and this needs to be fixed asap.

Thoughts?

Hi wtd3, good work on the research.

It's true that there are security updates and other changes in Firefox in each release, and that some of these changes may affect how add-ons work. The problem is tracking down the exact problem, which can be difficult to reproduce because users' configurations are very individual.

Although the Trusteer Rapport add-ons is useful for securing your connection to sites that use it -- especially banking sites -- I don't think you need to run it on days where you don't use those sites. Maybe I am misremembering how it works, but I don't think it does anything on a site that isn't using their software on the server side.
