How can I set Firefox 31.0 Mac to let me choose which folder I want to download a file to? I want to be able to pick a specific folder for each file I download.

I used to be able to select the folder I want a download to save to. I think this changed when I updated to the latest version of firefox (unless a setting got changed but I can't find any info re FF 31.0). When it asks me to open or save, I click save and instead of being able to choose a folder it goes directly to the downloads folder. Then I have to move it to the folder I want the file to reside in. Much more work.

Try the Preferences dialog. This article has the steps: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.

Thanks but I checked that already. It's set to "always ask" and it asks me if I want to either open the file or save it but when I click save it doesn't offer me a choice of where to save it. It goes directly to the downloads folder. If I hold down the control key while clicking the download link and select "save link as" I have a limited number of choices but still have to move the file after (unless one of the choices happens to be where I want to store the file) so there's no point. I used to be able to simply chose save in the initial popup and navigate to any folder on my system. I can't go any deeper than the folders listed. For example, I can't go into Documents and navigate any deeper. I can only select Documents or whatever other higher level folders are listed. The second image I posted shows the Control click and "save link as" options.

This is not something about FireFox in particular but rather is about OS X in general. And, apparently, it's not particularly new either: I found a reference to it published back five years ago in 2009.

In a File dialog, you click the little down arrow, ▾, that is just to the right of the filename and is called a "Disclosure Button," in order to disclose (or "drop down" to) the general file browser interface that enables you to select an arbitrary destination path.

See attached markup of your screenshot

Hi Catgrass, I defer to Spook regarding the dialog, since I use Windows.

Regarding "Ask me every time" not working, does Firefox's behavior differ based on the kind of file you are trying to open/download (e.g., mp3, pdf, doc), or is it failing for all kinds of content?

Automatic Save Folder {web link} This add-on will open the File Browser at the right location, using simple filters on the downloaded file. The filters are based on filenames and hosted domain's name.
