I cannot open either Firefox or Internet Explorer on my laptop without creating a new user for my computer.

I will shut my laptop down, and when I restart my computer I click on the icon for Firefox and it attempts to load but the program does not open and there isn't a window that pops up either. I have to create a new user for my laptop every time I want to use the internet and I'm not sure how to fix the problem. I may have a virus but I run my scan every day and it doesn't catch anything.

What malware scanner do you use? These two tools are highly regarded for supplemental scanning, and because they do not run in real time, they should not conflict with your existing software:

Malwarebytes Anti-malware : http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

SUPERAntiSpyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/

Does it help to hold the Shift key when you double-click the Firefox icon? This invokes "Safe Mode" which disables some add-ons and settings. If you get the Safe Mode dialog, click the "Start in Safe Mode" button.

I cannot open the icon at all, the only way I can is to create a new user account on my laptop. I have Avast Antivirus and it scans but doesnt catch anything.

You could download the additional scanners on another PC to a USB flash drive or CD and then scan your problem system.

Any other problem symptoms?

Can you start Firefox using the profile manager:

Start > search box:

firefox.exe -p

If you get the profile manager dialog, click Create to establish a new Firefox profile and then start up in that one. If that works, then likely there are some problem settings or add-ons in your previous profile.

You probably should make some good backups in case you need to rebuild your system.
