The text size is too small to read, and I'm tired of having to use 'Cntrl+' on just about any new tab I open. Is there a way to enlage the default text size the tab opens up to?
Every time I update Firefox, it 'helpfully' resizes everything to a smaller size. (grr) How do reset the default text size and tabs so I don't have to use 'cntrl+ every time I open a new tab?

You can use one of these extensions to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages:
- Default FullZoom Level: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-fullzoom-level/
- NoSquint: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/nosquint/
I've already tried that. Neither did anything for me. Any other suggestions?
Each of those two extensions allow to set a default (global) zoom setting via their options that is used on all websites.
