How do I make Thunderbird 3 look and feel more like Thunderbird 2?

There are a number of changes that can be made to the look and feel of Thunderbird Version 3 that make it more like the version 2 interface. There is a detailed article on the MozillaZine that describes how to "Make Thunderbird 3.1 look like Thunderbird 2". This page summarizes some of the items from that article.

Remove buttons in the message's header

If the large header bar on messages with the reply button in the header is not for you, install the Compact header add-on. After installation, you can customize the toolbar to put the Reply, Delete and other buttons on the main toolbar as they will disappear when the add-on reduces the header to the old view. Right-click the toolbar, select customize and drag the buttons you want to the toolbar.

Display messages in their own windows instead of a tab

You might also want to display messages in their own window rather than in a new tab. Select Tools | Options (Windows) or Thunderbird | Preferences (Mac and Linux), then select Advanced and then Reading & Display. In the "Open messages in" section, select "A new message window".

Display message count or folder size in the folder view

The missing message count in folder view can be cured by installing the Extra Folder Columns add-on.

Customize the folder view

The folder view can be changed to All Folders from Unified Folders if you don't like the new unified appearance with all in-boxes clumped together. Simply select the View | Folders menu.

While it is possible to go back to an older version of Thunderbird , we do not recommend it. Thunderbird 2 is no longer being maintained, so there will be no more bug fixes or patches to address security vulnerabilities.
