Oh!! back up..lucky i had a backup profile..not my last one..AND it took me three hours to put it back! and a lot of my logins and passwords are still missing.

I understand why you are upset. Please calm down.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

YEARS of passwords and logins have gone and firefox will not allow me to put my backup profile in. I spent HOURS trying.. I know mozilla are volenteers and I appreciate that, but WHY did this update happen? I had it set so that only I could allow updates, but it just updated anyway. Even to log into here I had to create another user name and password. An explanation would be nice..

Hi empty, if you haven't already rebooted Windows, try that first to resolve potential permission issues.

Important: do not use the "system restore" feature as that can cause permanent data loss.

Next, let's look for your Firefox data. The shop is suggesting a global search for deleted files, which you could try yourself, but please try this at this point:

If necessary, turn on viewing of hidden files and folders: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files

Then check these locations for possible Firefox data:

  • C:\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
    • How many semi-randomly named profile folders do you find? If there is only one folder, it's likely your current one that doesn't have your data.
  • On your Desktop, and Old Firefox Data folder containing semi-randomly named profile folders
    • How many profile folders do you find? If there are folders here, one of them most likely has your previous settings.

Based on what you find, we can suggest the shortest set of next steps.

If you need to do a global scan of your C drive for deleted files, try this program:
