Accessing bookmarks sites causes those sites and others to take forever to close.

After the major Firefox upgrade (ver. 59?) my bookmarks have caused great problems. Once I open Bookmarks, Firefox becomes slower. But worse is if I click on a Bookmark, then try to close that site, I get an error message at the top of the screen saying Firefox is not responding. Eventually Firefox responds and closes that page. But just having my bookmarks open, all pages are susceptible to this error message when closing. It takes upward of 30 seconds or more sometimes to close each page. I even added memory thinking that could be the problem. I now have 8102 MB of usable memory on a Windows 7 Home (X64) 2.30 GHz Intel core with 64 kb primary memory cache, 256 kb secondary mem cache and 3072 kb tertiary mem cache; multi core, hyper threaded. All I do is shop and read, no gaming. I've consulted some techies and they can't figure it out.

Hi KT12, that's very puzzling!!

Where are you opening your bookmarks that causes this problem? For example:

  • Keeping the Bookmarks Sidebar open to the left of the tab
  • Open the Library window ("Show All Bookmarks")
  • something else

Have you set up Sync, with your bookmarks being sent to your Firefox Account when they are updated? If so, could you:

(A) Make extra bookmark backups in both available formats:

(B) Temporarily uncheck that box on the Options page, Firefox Account category, so Firefox is not sending bookmark changes to your Firefox Account

Any difference?

Do you have the same slow-closure issue if you go to a bookmarked page using the address bar? The address bar should show a star next to each bookmark match for what you type in the bar, so you can click that on the drop-down.

jscher2000, thank you so much for taking the time to help me. I do NOT have my bookmarks synced to my cell. I don't have a Ipad. Yes, I backup my bookmarks at least once a week, both ways: HTML and json. When I was referring to my open bookmarks page, I was referring to the Library-show all bookmarks.

I'd like to add that I also have this slowdown when I add a bookmark, rather when I click on Bookmarks at the top of the screen (menu bar) is when it all begins. Just clicking on Bookmarks I often get a "Firefox is not responding" for a few seconds. I do not have this problem when I click on my Abbreviated Bookmarks, or any of the 60-odd bookmarks within that folder, which is on my bookmarks toolbar.

After I added more memory a few months ago, things were immediately better, but gradually have become once again intolerable as they were prior to the memory upgrade.

As far as I know the only Firefox acct I have is for this support forum which I had to set up to post.

Hi KT12, do you have zillion bookmarks??

The Troubleshooting Information page has a "Verify Integrity" button to do a little light maintenance on the Places database (where bookmarks and history are stored). You can open that using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Then scroll way down or use Find to search for Integrity in the Places Database section. At first, nothing will seem to happen, but then several seconds after clicking the button Firefox should report some diagnostic results below it.

Please copy/paste the results somewhere safe, then exit/restart Firefox to see whether it helped.
