When I try a search using my google toolbar it becomes unresponsive, and when I open Tools > Addons, a pop-up appears saying unresponsive script, which is followed by firefox crashing. How do I fix this?

It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in safe mode (don't forget to select Disable all add-ons when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See this article for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and this one for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem does not disappear when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.

I removed google-toolbar, which became totally non-responsive and did not work AT ALL -- with a repeating warning of a script error (script has stopped running): Script: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsExtensionManager.js:623
- Note: this happened when I installed updates that were found for Personas and Foxmarks
You can try to delete the files extensions.* (extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.
See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled extensions that are not compatible on the next start in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the "Find Updates" button to do a compatibility check.
I have the exact same behavior. Is this a Google Toolbar problem or a Firefox problem. Does this need to be reported to Google as well?
Same happened to me with persona upgrade.
Started Firefox in safe mode with disable add-on checked. Opened Add-ons and disabled Persona. Restarted Firefox normally. I no longer receive the script warning. I can now open Add-ons and Google toolbar now works. Running Window XP SP3

This is caused by an incompatibility between Google Toolbar and Personas Plus when Personas plus tries to update. Start in safe mode, disable personas plus and restart.
The personas plus update has been disabled for now (and if you already installed it, you can just disable it as detailed above).

I can't access addons to disable them in safe or normal mode. It all happened after getting a persona update. My Google search and toolbar is screwy now as well. I can't unload it or delete it, so I can reload it. Biggest problem is no access to addons, so I can't do any problem solving there.
Thanks jghent. I had the same problem described above with google toolbar totally unresponsive (and most the buttons on it not even showing) and inability to access add ons window and annoying script error message that would freeze up the program & I'd have to kill Firefox via Process Explorer / task mgr. I followed your instructions to start in safe mode with add ons disabled, then disabled Personas and now my Google Toolbar is back .
Prior to that I had tried deleting the files cor-el had suggested and restarting but that seemed to have no effect on this problem.
So until there is something that will make them compatible I'll live without Personas since that's just cosmetic.
Thanks again for sharing the suggestion.
The latest version Personas interferes with Google Toolbar. You have to disable Personas. I had to uninstall and re-install the toolbar just to get the add-on list to display so I could disable it. Then everything was fine.
same thing happened to me but also colorful tabs were disabled. I reloaded firefox and now it will not open
I think born2mow has it. I am not sure how it all started, but Forecast Fox and Google toolbar stopped working (or loading for that matter) sometime last week). Only when Personas16 was removed did Google toolbar work correctly after re-enabling. Personasxx might be conflicting with several other add-ons.
I had this problem too, google toolbar was unresponsive. When I tried to go to add-ons to uninstall it firefox would freeze then crash.
To fix it, I ran firefox in safe mode, chose tools then add-ons and uninstalled the toolbar. It no longer crashes now but I still can't use the google toolbar.
Same here. Having a similar problem with Firefox 3.6.9. Continually freezing up and unresponsive. I deselected "Google Toolbar" and so far . . . the browser is working as it should.
