cached web content won't clear
When I open: Preferences; Advanced and try to Clear Now the Cached Web Content it will not clear. I am left with "Your Web Content is Cache is Currently Using 43.0 KB of disk space, and I have a long list of "default/cache2/doomed/" files. Help! How can I clear all of this?

Location of the cache files; Windows: *C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\ Mac: ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/ Linux: ~/.cache/mozilla/firefox/
Close Firefox. Open your file browser to the above, and remove the folder.

Thank you for your reply / help. I've got one question: I have a Macbook air - I see in the location of the cache files the link starts with "Windows:" - what about an Apple computer? Pardon my ignorance, but would this work just the same with a Macbook Air running Mavericks?

The entries folder in the cache2 location is used for the disk cache. The content of entries is copied to doomed when there is a problem with the disk cache detected on startup. This doomed folder should be cleared (i.e. shouldn't have files in it) on the next start (Firefox > Quit) when everything is OK. If files in the doomed folder gets created then something is wrong with the disk cache. Make sure you close Firefox properly before closing your operating system. Notre that on Mac you can close all open windows, but still have the Firefox application running (menu bar is visible).
Use one of these to close Firefox.
- "3-bar" menu button# -> Exit (Power button)
- Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
- Linux: File -> Quit
- Windows: File -> Exit
Hello Fred and Cor-el, Well, I tried both closing Firefox (a few times), and I located the Profiles folder, which appears to have nothing in it - when I tried to open it, nothing came up. And, I still have the same problem :(
Any other things I can try?

You can ignore the doomed folder.
Do you see any files in the cache2/entries folder?
I finally got into the cache2 folder with this:
~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/l727dwws.5mst3afo.default/cache2/doomed/
Here I found a doomed folder with a lot of documents (as shown in my first email), I also found an empty entries folder and an index document.
So, now I am now thinking of 'moving to trash' all of the documents in the doomed folder.
Thoughts? This shouldn't cause any unforeseen problems, will it?
Update: Moved everything to trash, and now I have ""Your Web Content is Cache is Currently Using 47.0 KB of disk space"! Here is what is contained in my Cache folder (perhaps I should delete all of this??): By the way, the numbers under the first 4 CACHE documents are all folders:
